The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to the NGO for its "efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating, through witness testimony, that nuclear weapons must never be used again," as highlighted in the official citation.

Nihon Hidankyo is a grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as Hibakusha, formed in response to the atomic bombings of August 1945.
Amid ongoing global conflicts, the Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighted that this award reinforces the "nuclear taboo." In its press release, the committee emphasized, "At this moment in human history, it is important to remind ourselves what nuclear weapons are: the most destructive weapons the world has ever seen."
